Abstract
Urban livability and accessibility are two critical determinants of a city's competitiveness and attractiveness according to the Global Power City Index (GPCI) and other various international indices. In an increasingly globalized era, major cities worldwide are competing to redevelop and improve both dimensions to fulfil the needs of millions of inhabitants and attract top talent to reside and thrive. This policy brief aims to compare two major cities, Paris and Jakarta, with a special focus on the recent public transportation infrastructure project as a catalyst to redevelop the city.
Several key observations include the impact of public transportation, project delivery model, and benefit to the immediate surroundings. By learning from The Grand Paris Express, currently Europe’s largest transit expansion project, we recommended a model of how projects should be carried out to accelerate urban redevelopment. To improve Jakarta’s livability and accessibility dimensions and increase its ranking in the global index, the focus should be on enhancing mobility and public transportation, including easily accessible urban facilities and economic activities within a 15-to-30-minute travel distance.
